You got that right. LBI’s most adored and most dysfunctional Osprey couple, Jack and Wendy, have returned for the Summer and claimed their spot early. After their success fledging Danny last year, their hopes must be high for another magical season of love and family down the shore.
Our hope is that Jack can pull it together.
Jack still appears to have some growing up to do, and has been seen being a little selfish with his fish, acting like a gorilla, doing lots of mantling, and trying to get down to business before he has proven to Wendy that he’ll be a great father and husband. Remember, the male Osprey is responsible for feeding the entire family for the whole season while the female protects and raises the young at the nest. A smart woman like Wendy wants proof that she and her young won’t starve because of Jack’s nonsense.
Still, their shared love for Danny clearly bonded the couple and they are off to a quick start nesting. No need for excessive Skydancing this year…
Interestingly, we learn from Ben Wurst this week on the NJ Osprey Project Facebook page all about Osprey copulation. From what we read there, it looks clearly like Wendy is withholding…. for now. Also, notice how Jack has to rest on his little elbows, or his tarsus, or whatever to keep from stabbing his girl with his talons.
Welcome back, Wendy. Welcome back, Jack! Do it again!
Honk if you love Osprey.
