The way these battle play out is something like this: the two competing males fly around screaming at each other, until one is finally brave enough to land on the nest. When he does, the other male tries to tear his face off, at which point the male on the nest does a sick backflip.

This can go on for hours, becoming a sick game of chicken as the Osprey get more and more tired and less and less capable of doing a sweet backflip.

An Osprey’s life is tough to say the least. These two went at for over two hours, and it could be still going on. The fight just spun off into the distance, over the sea, as two exhausted male Osprey play the ultimate game of chicken.

Eight hours later, at sundown tonight, a lone female sat on the nest. As darkness fell, and she realized no one was coming to dance for her, or to defend the nest, she flew to perch in a tall tree in a dark corner of the marsh, clutching one half a fish she was saving for something, or someone.

  1. I don’t think too many people have ever witnessed this. Great photography–thanks for sharing this. I hope one of them made it back to her!

    1. Thanks. Yeah, the extent of it was pretty amazing. There are lots of quick fights but this was truly an epic battle. At the height of it, 6 Osprey were involved.

    1. They certainly do. At the early stages, whoever does not have a fish runs defense. Later, she’ll have to defend the nest by herself quite often when the male is out fishing and she’s with the beh-behs. It’s a shared responsibility. Last night she need defense because she needed had the ball (the fish)

      1. heard about females doing the almost back flip thing- nature on the telly – whilst the males did the chasing thing.

        1. I saw both take control of the nest and flip for sure. The female sat it out early… I discovered later she has an injured leg, and from the photos figured out she injured it during this episode! Female Osprey are 100% dependent on the males for food when nesting which is why the courtship ritual mimics that… but in terms of fighting and defending, what I’ve seen is that whoever does not have the fish does the heavy lifting!
