Gross Invasion Of PIPL Privacy

Boy Piping Plover to build stuff, Especially little Scrapes. These are the shallow impressions they dig in the stand with their itty bitty legs which they hope to use as a nest. These are the things that get stepped on, run over, and scratched up by dogs. Even the Bible tells you the beach is a horrible place to build a home.
Boy Piping Plover like to build stuff. Especially little Scrapes. These are the shallow impressions they dig in the stand with their itty bitty legs, which they hope to use as a nest if it doesn’t get stepped on, run over, or scratched up by dogs. Even the Bible tells you the beach is a horrible place to build a home.
If the Boy PIPL is sufficiently satisfied with him scraping effort, he presents it to his Lady PIPL. She will often hop in to test it out and do a couple extra scrapes, which we can imagine is the PIPL equivalent of "You missed a spot"

If the Lady PIPL is sufficiently satisfied she'll nip his little behind in a gentle, loving way, which is not readily apparent by the expression on this Boy PIPLs face. But don't worry, he is basically peeping his tiny head off throughout this entire event.

Oh crap. She did it now. Here he comes. Here comes trouble.

A Goose Stepping PIPL is probably one the funniest things one can see on this planet. Look at that silly Boy. He looks like a Prussian Soldier. He does his adorable little march towards his Lady friend, and attempt to kick her in the butt. I assure you it all quite romantic in real life.

The problem is she keeps inching forward away from him, resulting in repeated failures. But if he eventually lands a few good kicks, well, that's the end of that. He has locked down his Lady for the Season.

The Magic Of Spring
The Magic Of Spring

Piping Plover mating is beautiful, hilarious, sweet, and bizarre. It all begs the question: Who comes up with this stuff? Shorely, it wasn’t the PIPL themselves. Or was it?

That’s a mighty big question, and one of many the beauty of the Shore inevitably forces us to ask ourselves. Why is it so insanely gorgeous? How is this all so perfect? Where should I get Ice Cream tonight? We can suppose we’ll always be continually seeking those answers (except the Ice Cream one, I vote The Big Dipper in Surf City, no contest).

One thing we can be sure of though is that Piping Plover were made for beach. They, and all the Beach Nesting Birds, are the tiny little heartbeats that bring the beach to life, and fulfill the purpose of this magnificent habitat. Someone or something, intentionally or perhaps accidentally, designed them perfectly for the beach, and the beach perfectly for them. I like to think I can’t live live without the Beach, yet shorely I can. The Piping Plover take things to a whole new level: they literally can not live without the Beach. We live at the Beach. They live on it.

There is a whole lot of fascination, giggles, and beauty in the tiny details of the itty-bitty mating ritual of the Piping Plover.  But the “why” of it all? It’s truly astonishing.
