In Memory of Franz

It is with great sadness, but not great surprise, that we share the news that Tufters & Tacey have a lost a chick. ‘Lil Franz is gone. While there always remains an itty-bitty seed of hope that Franz is still out there, tucked away in the dune, he has most likely succumbed to fearsome predators or perhaps exposure after failing to secure his spot in his last game of Musical Roosts.

Three Remain
And then there were three

The odds are severely stacked against each and every Piping Plover from birth until death. The statistical probability of all four chicks making it through the first week was extremely low. The statistical probability of all three making it to a fledge this August is also very low. Buying into the this life story of Tufters & Tacey or any Piping Plover for that matter is not for the weak hearted.

But Franz is survived by his father Tufters, his mother Tacey, his two sisters Coppelia & Swanhilde, and his ‘lil brother Tufters Jr. Franz made the ultimate sacrifice as the siblings have a much better shot at making it now.

It's a terrible photo, but the only shot I have of all four playing happily together & loving life.

Hopefully the Memory of Franz will serve to remind us how fragile & precious & itty bitty our lives really are. So let’s live the dream while we’re all here together and can do so. Hopefully it will also remind us to do what we can to help the little Plovers get a leg up in this world.

A Rainbow over the Plover Field as Franz says goodbye.

Much love ‘lil Franz. Your adorable itty-bittiness will not be forgotten. Peace.
