They say you should never feed a wild bird, but no one said anything about providing some fresh water. Longtime Readers will remember when we provided Mac Daddy with a bucket of fresh water which affectionately became known as his “buk buk”. Since Big Poppa is such a good Dad, I decided that he too deserves the Buk Buk treatment. While seagulls have the ability to drink ocean water, then filter and expel some of the salt through their beaks, they still need fresh water. A little oasis on the beach is a big shot in the arm for a hard working Herring Gull.

But drinking from the Buk Buk does not come naturally. It takes a while to figure it out. Incidentally, you should never force feed a seagull water, like with a syringe if you happen to get hold of an injured one. Gulls have a tube in their mouths which leads straight to their lungs. Forced hydration = pneumonia.

"Guh???" Frito, the oldest of Big Poppa's brood discovers the Buk Buk first.
