It should be well known that it is bad to feed wild animals. I try very hard not to, even though every instinct in my body screams “throw the Dolphin a fish and he’ll be your friend!”. But no one ever (ever) told me you can’t give wild beasts fresh water. So that’s exactly what I did when I thought of the idea just recently. Herring Gulls need fresh water. They can, and do, drink salt water out of necessity. They have the extremely fancy ability to process limited amounts of salt water, and expel the salt through their beaks (a skill I sure wish I had at times) Somewhere in this season’s readings is a photo of Mac Daddy expelling salt through his nostrils. Anyhoo, they still need fresh water and I’m sure it is just as much of a drag for them to have to haul it home during a great day at the beach just to hydrate as it is for us.
