Tuesday’s West Wind set us back on the right track and we are having spectacular late summer days, with a nice set up for the Grande Finale. Monday is starting to look dicey thanks to Isaac and Sunday’s forecast is slowly deteriorating. But for now we’ve got sun, heat, warm water, clear water, fish… we just need waves. They should start rising as the weather deteriorates, peaking out on Tuesday with some 5-6 footers. Winds look nice and mixed, but watch out for the afternoon South trade winds. Late day South wind tends to get more intense in the kind of dry heat we’re having right now, and kill Mamu Fives more quickly than dinner does.
A couple of Tids & Bits:
POTENTIAL ULTRA LOW EVENT: We have the potential for a classic LBI Ultra Low Tide this weekend. When the moon is full and you have a late afternoon low tide, you can get some of the lowest, walk-the-whole-island-on-the-sandbar, low tides. Shellin’, skimmin’, and tide pool exploring could be your Saturday afternoon activity if all goes well. The low tide is a little earlier than I’d like to see (around 3PM instead of around 6PM) but look out for it.
ULTRA FULL MOONS: Alert Reader Janice points out that this weekend basically has 2 full moons with the Moon being 99% full for two moonrises. The rises are just a touch earlier than perfect, but could be spectacularly dramatic.
Aug 31, 2012 7:16 PM – 99.6% Full Moon
Sep 1, 2012 7:45 PM – 99.4%
Sep 2, 2012 – 8:14 PM – 96.8%
BLUE MOONS: Alert Reader T points out that we have a Blue Moon this month. Unrelated to the above alert, a Blue Moon occurs when there are 2 full moons in the same month, thanks to the subtle imperfections of our human calendar vs. the true lunar cycle. There was a full moon on August 1st as well as the one tomorrow on the 31st. The last Blue Moon for 3 years.
MAC DADDY BURGERS: Alert reader Jamie points out that Woodie’s, in Ship Bottom, has a Mac Daddy Burger: it’s a burger with fried Mac & Cheese on top of it. I smell a field trip coming up. On the subject, Woodie’s in Ship Bottom is one of the better burgers on the Island. They use meat from Oakies and grind it fresh each day. They shape your patty when you order and flame grill it. Simple, but always done perfectly.
MUCH WORSE THAN CHEEZITZ: Alert Reader Aunt Wendy points out this grotesquerie: Seagulls Eating Live Whales. I’m at a loss here as both are Gulls & Whales are stars of Readings From The Northside. Can’t we all just get along?
