Longtime readers of the Readings may recall a very special reading: The Mamu 5. Put simply, a “Mamu 5” is any day where we have 5 star beach conditions at 5 PM. It’s the term for those days when you just don’t want to leave the beach, ever. A lot of conditions must come together to create a Mamu 5… the temperature has to be warm, but not too warm, the air needs perfect crispness, and the Wind must be subtle: cooling, but not too cool, and certainly not annoying. There are all sorts of conditions that can make you eager to head home from the beach at 5. A Mamu 5 Day is special in the extreme.
Unfortunately, dinner is the enemy of the Mamu 5, as every precious second you spend in the bliss of an endless summer’s day afternoon you grow hungrier… as do your kids, your guests, your husbands & wives, your cats and dogs. These threats of starvation are a dark cloud over even the most perfect Mamu 5.
Give someone you love a Mamu 5. It is a priceless gift. Mamu 5s create memories that will last a lifetime, probably more. If you see the afternoon shaping up to be a Mamu 5, act quickly. It is critical that everything be taken care of regarding dinner and such before you attempt to settle the recipient of your gift into the Mamu 5. Don’t involve the recipient in any of the decision making; use all of your instincts and make sure you have all bases covered and details locked down and executed before you let the recipient know. Do whatever you have to do to ensure that the recipient will surrender, guilt free.
When you have everything in order be sure to deliver beer, wine, sodas, cigars, books, snacks or any other specialties appropriate to the age and tastes of the recipient. These tiny touches (especially the alcohol) are key ingredients to a perfect Mamu 5.
Don’t delay. Summer’s End has some of the most spectacularly perfect Mamu Fives of the season, but they grow more rare each day.
