Just when I was about to write a post asking why we never see Bluefish Blitzes like I remember as a kid… Today we had a Bluefish Blitz of epic proportions on the North End of LBI. It was like to 1970s up in here. Snappers were leaping out of the water. We were dodging them as they chased baitfish in the shallows where we bodysurfed. The birds went berserk. And for the first time in years, we saw old timers run back home to grab their rods in hopes of catching some of the action. Heck, some old timer even called me a “s%#tbag” and tried to cast into my face as I paddled in from a run on the paddleboard. It was awesome!
It is hard to say how long the trend will continue. It has certainly been building for a few days in the wake of the strong South wind and the upwelling. The tiny baitfish both Terns & Bluefish love to nom nom were still thick in the surf by evening. Whatever the future, it was a day we won’t soon forget. We even got a chance to see why they call them “Bluefish”. While on land they are a deep greenish-color, when you see them swim they flash a beautiful neon-blue tone.
